What is it about the name Mollie / Molly that compels everyone I meet to tell me of their previous experience with a Mollie. "I knew a Mollie once. And she was awful. She stabbed me in the back." Or..."I had a friend named Mollie growing up. She was my best friend." Or my favorite..."Oooh! My dog's name is Mollie!" That's the best. I have one co-worker with a dog named Molly and for a while, he insisted on calling me like he would call his dog. "Here Mollie, here!" Yeah. That was fun. I'm not complaining about all of this, but rather...ruminating. And my co-worker wasn't the first person to tell me he had a pet named Mollie...throughout my life I have met people who would claim the same thing. Well, according to a survey by Veterinary Pet Insurance, Molly is the most popular female pet name. Um, yeah...pet name. Even though I would say Molly is a well known name, I wouldn't call it "popular" among people. In 2005, it ranked 97th for girl names, according to Social Security Online. Well-known, but not popular. And that was Molly with a "y." Mollie with an "i-e" only ranked 740th. Maybe it has something to do with its low popularity, but you don't hear of this happening with people named "Jen" or "Emily." Only with me, Mollie. It's strange. Or maybe it has nothing to do with the name at all. Perhaps people meet me and think...What should I say? I need to make conversation here...maybe I'll talk about her name...I don't know what it is. But apparently, I have a nostalgic and pet name.
